Most physical therapy assistant programs are five semester two-year programs resulting in a associate degree.

All of these programs require clinical work so cannot be completed totally online! Although some portions of the program can be done in an online fashion a large portion involves lab work and as such must be done in a setting where you practice on your fellow students.

Some colleges offer the ability to do some of your classes online, thus saving transportation costs to and from the school. In this case there is usually weekend clinical work. This is a necessity as a lot of what you learn, you will learn by doing.

You absolutely want as much hands-on training as possible. Your instructors will be monitoring and correcting you in the various procedures involved in the therapy.

You will find that many community colleges have excellent physical therapy assistant programs. My advice to you is to make a list of your local community colleges, junior colleges, colleges and universities and find out which ones offer these programs.

Whether you are attending school locally or not, check out these various schools to get a feel for what is a good program. By checking out various local programs you can see how different schools teach the various techniques involved. You also find out how much lab work each college devotes to the program.

In my opinion this one-on-one training is essential in learning how to be a physical therapy assistant.

Curriculums vary from school to school so this would give you a way to evaluate different schools whether you are attending locally or not.

As we already know there is a large aging population, the skills of a physical therapy assistant will be more in demand than ever. Either you personally or someone you know I am sure has had interaction with the physical therapy assistant.

The boom in physical exercise has also increased the demand for the physical therapy assistant.

Our favorite athletes all seem to wind up on the DL. A physical therapy assistant would probably be involved in the rehab. We see more and more a weekend warriors experiencing the same injuries.

Because of various wars there is more and more technology being used for someone who is lost a limb. This is an unfortunate consequence of the endless war we are now engaged in. A physical therapy assistant is vital in working with such individuals.

As each of the above scenarios shows rising demand you may conclude there will also be rising demand for the physical therapy assistant. This is a great career opportunity for those still in high school as well as someone looking to retrain in a new career.

As I stated earlier investigating the physical therapy assistant programs in your area would be my first step in looking at this career choice.
